The Class of 2008 Senior Class Gift Committee is excited to announce the Class of 2008 Senior Class Gift to Rensselaer. The gift is an Electronic Carillon System that will sit on top of the Rensselaer Union and will chime the Alma Mater and other programmed bells to the campus. The gift was decided upon from a list of ideas submitted by members of the Class of 2008 Class Gift Survey sent out in March.
The carillon is very customizable in terms of the days and times it will play, as well as volume control. Initially, the carillon will ring a notification bell on an hourly interval between a range of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, with a later start time on weekends. At noon each day, the carillon will ring the RPI Alma Mater that will further promote the spirit and pride of the institute. Many historical colleges and universities use a similar system to add ambience and spirit to their campus. In recognition of the class gift, a plaque will accompany the system and be placed on the outside of the Rensselaer Union on the main level, and will be dedicated at Homecoming 2008.
The Carillon System is not new to Rensselaer, in fact a similar system was heard daily over ten years ago up until the Rensselaer Union was renovated. The Class of 2008 gift will rekindle a tradition that was once a part of the RPI campus. The gift is both feasible and affordable to the class, which will raise the money for the gift from the Senior Class. The sound from a carillon creates a very collegiate tradition that already exists in many campuses around the world. It will also add to the experience of RPI as a New Ivy and to current students, prospective students, alumni, the community, friends, faculty, and staff of this prestigious institution. This gift is unique to RPI and will allow us to show our pride for the institution.
We are asking members of the Class of 2008 to contribute towards the Senior Class Gift. Contributions for the gift are not important in amount but in participation. Participating shows pride for the Class of 2008, the institute, our degree and it allows us to leave our mark that will be heard on the RPI campus for years to come. To participate, click here or click Donate Now on the right.
We invite each and everyone one of you to participate in this campaign, no matter the amount. However, we have made some suggestions on different levels of giving. Any gift is appropriate, it's all about participation and supporting our alma mater!
